The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a 2013 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson. It was produced by New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in collaboration with Wingnut Films. It was distributed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and is the second installment in a three-part film adaptation based on the novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien. The film was preceded by An Unexpected Journey and will be followed by The Battle of the Five Armies.
